Every summer the Defender Association offers a summer internship primarily directed to law students who have completed their second year in law school. The Summer Intern Program, which runs from the end of May through end of July, begins with an extensive two week in-house training program and rotates the intern through a series of assignments all of which are supervised and many of which allow the students to advocate on behalf of Defender clients before judges, trial commissioners and bail commissioners. Students are also assisted by written training materials that are revised on a yearly basis and that cover Defender intern practice plus substantive areas of the law. The Director of Training supervises our Summer Law Intern Program with the assistance of all department heads and deputies in whose units the students work.

The Defender Association will consider the application of students who have completed their second year studies. (The Association does offer a limited number of internship positions to first year students who have a relevant work background and who are committed to public defender work.)
